Critical & Creative Thinking

Waterford West State School identifies and provides for students who excel, or have the potential to excel, with the opportunities to develop their potential through appropriate curriculum provisions.

Our school employs Supplementary Teachers whose role is to assist teachers in identifying and providing support for these students and coordinate programs pertinent to the needs of high achieving students.

Australian Maths Trust

The Australian Mathematics Competition targets high achieving students in Maths with an emphasis on problem solving and valuable life skills. This competition requires significant perseverance and application.

University of New South Wales Academic Competitions

Students interested in the challenge of this mind stretching academic competition are offered to participate annually. The competitions subjects include Science, Mathematics, Writing, English and Digital Technologies.

Interschool Competitions

Interschool competitions are attended by excelling students. A number of opportunities arise during the year where students are selected, trained and participate in team competitions. The tasks involve advanced problem solving, critical thinking and collaboration in Literacy, Numeracy, Science and the Arts.

Impact Projects

IMPACT is a highly successful and contemporary online learning project that deeply engages students in learning and boosts achievement. At Waterford West State School, selected students in Years 4 and 5 participate in these targeted, digital extension projects in both literacy and numeracy. The target group is mid to high achieving students.

IMPACT stands for Inspire, Model, Practise, Apply, Connect and Transform. It is a dynamic set of proven pedagogical strategies that align with best practice models from around the world.

Projects are delivered in partnership with the Brisbane school of Distance Education and facilitated by teachers at Waterford West State School. These extension projects add value to what is being taught in the classroom and the online delivery and interaction brings another dimension to student learning.

IMPACT projects support the development of ICT Literacy for students in a way that is very relevant and engaging. ICT Literacy is vital for students to participate in a world that is becoming increasingly dependant on these technologies. Students enjoy working, interacting, learning and collaborating in this online environment.
